Gliding Camp 2011   Leave a comment

Details on this and photos soon to come.
Upcoming events include the Basic Camp at unit HQ (Longbank, RNZAF Base Woodbourne) and the two activities 27 SQN is involved in for the Airshow in April, plus two parades on ANZAC Day.
Cadets need to work on their drill especially for these parades, and this will be our focus for the rest of the term.

Rotoiti Camp promo poster

With parade nights now in full swing, the first camps of 2011 are on the horizon, or in the case of the hotly anticipated Gliding Camp, less than two weeks away! That’s the 18-20th (not the 21st as stated incorrectly on the form) of March.

A reminder that permission slips need to be in, signed by a parent/guardian, and the money needs to be paid, in order for a Cadet to attend. If first term subscription fees are up to date, the Unit Support Committee will subsidise the cost to $45. Further information can be found on the SQN Facebook page under events: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=182474778455253&index=1.

The primary focus of this camp is for cadets to experience non-powered flight in gliders. However, other planned activities include water sports, orienteering and confidence-building events. All activities are planned, fully supervised and a risk analysis is completed.

Equipment lists and more info soon to follow: watch this space. For any queries please use the contact below:

And near the end of the term the annual Basic Camp is planned, with activities for all Cadets – not just Basics! Stand by for more details.

Finally, course nomination forms have been sent away to Southern Area and we are anticipating some of our Cadets going on the Junior and Senior Leaders courses at Burnham over the holidays, and perhaps some of our SNCOs staffing these courses. Good luck to all!

2011   Leave a comment

The first parade night of 2011 for No. 27 SQN will be on Tuesday 1st February, at our headquarters (Longbank, RNZAF Base Woodbourne).

A high standard of uniform and drill is expected of all returning Cadets, and our focus this term will be on respect for NCOs and officers - be prepared! Remember that all flights have moved up: Basics are now Proficiency, and Proficiency are now Advanced. The large bus will be running at the usual time, and a reminder that you are expected to maintain exemplary behaviour at all times while in uniform – including while at the bus stop.

Any new Cadets wanting to join can be at the RNZAF Base Woodbourne main gate by 6:30 and wait for the Airforce Bus, or contact Unit Commander PLTOFF Wayne Pelvin on 027 667 792.

See you all there!

End of 2010   Leave a comment

With our Final Parade last week we ended a very busy year for No. 27 SQN. Annual highlights included a rather wet basic camp, Sparrowhawk, a number of shoots, the outdoor camp with the bivouacs, ANZAC and Battle of Britain day parades, while the gliding camp at Rotoiti, white water rafting and the arthritis collection were new introductions to our activities, some of which the Squadron hopes to carry on next year. And of course Pilot Officer Pelvin took over from Squadron Leader Willemse as CUCDR.

With the unfortunately abbreviated Final Parade we lost Warrant Officer Rebekah Simpson, who is off to university in Christchurch with all of our best wishes, and consequently Warrant Officer Isaac Udy is stepping up to the plate for 2011. Underofficer Joshua Mason returned from a stint at 23 SQN to assist with the training plan.

We hope to make 2011 an even busier year with a reviewed training plan, ambitions to enter two teams at Sparrowhawk and take part in the Davy Memorial Drill Competition (so step up your drill!), and more weekend activities. Recruiting has kicked off at Bohally and will continue at the Colleges next year, but don’t be shy to tell your friends. Finally, with the departures and promotions spaces are opening up for new leaders and NCOs, as some of you are no doubt aware.

We wish you a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year, come back in February refreshed and with your uniform, drill and bearing at the highest standard yet and we shall have a great 2011.
